Dear Reader :

Creating “Double Takedown” is a milestone in my evolution as a mystery writer. I have always loved to write, starting with poetry and song lyrics as a teenager. As a literature major at Columbia, I read all the classics and had the opportunity to re-write a few endings that I felt could have been better.

But then life, law school, children, and professional practice prevented me from writing fiction. The good news for me, however, was that my day job as an employment attorney allowed me to still write stories – only constrained by the facts of my cases. And those cases included a myriad of social issues and fascinating real-life scenarios that I have been inspired to weave into my mystery novels.

My recently released Double Takedown, the sixth novel in my Mike Stoneman series, is a character-driven murder mystery adventure. Mike Stoneman, a grizzled NYPD homicide detective, is paired with Jason Dickson, a Black detective twenty years his junior.

The duo had a rocky beginning back in book #1 (Righteous Assassin) but they have grown into a true partnership as they have dealt with police corruption, corporate cover-ups, racism, and organized crime. But, most importantly, they have dealt with their personal relationships – both with each other and with their significant others.

The characters’ personal and family issues allow me to explore topical social and political elements as my detectives investigate high-profile murder cases. In Double Takedown, Mike and Jason face every cop’s nightmare – doubt about whether they arrested the wrong person. When the pressure to convict the man you arrested bumps up against the moral imperative of not sending away a man who might be innocent, the internal tension adds a dimension to this crime novel that makes the story thought-provoking as well as entertaining.
